Influence can be defined as the effect that somebody has on the way a person thinks or behaves. Influence has gotten a lot of benefits to a person who have got it, it gives a person an opportunity to attain easily his goals through inclining others behavior towards the attainment of that goals.
Influence can be obtained through four ways namely;
- Reward; it is a gift that influence seeker gives to a person for exhibiting the desired behavior. A role of reward is to encourage a particular behavior in the future. The ability of a person to use this method depends on his access to the rewards that he can give.This implies that if a person wishes to continue using rewards as a method to gain an influence, he/she should make use of such easily accessible rewards like verbal praise (e.g, by saying "That's great! Keep It Up! etc). It is a recommendable method of seeking an influence because it does not cause immediate hurts to the subject.
- Persuasion; it is a method of influencing others with convincing reasons and facts. This method requires a person to have an ability to talk convincingly and clearly, those are not able to talk convincingly and clearly find difficult in using this method. A method also requires a person to have a wider knowledge.
- Example; it is a method of influencing people simply by making your actions or behavior observed. In this case a person does not have to convince his subject through speech. A method requires an influence seeker to have a long period of time with his subject in order for his/her actions and behavior to be clearly and genuinely observed.
- Coercion; it refers to influencing others through fear. The threat that induce fear may pertain to physical pain that may be inflicted through the use of force or non-physical pain, such as painful feelings that might be experienced if one felt threatened with the loss of a job or position. This way of creating an influence is not good when it is used for prolonged period of time.
