The First Secretary of the Canadian High Commission and Education Sector Team Leader, Alice Birnbaum, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the programme is being implemented through the Education for Employment (EFE) Programme of College and Institutes Canada (CICan).
The five-year programme, dubbed Improving Skills Training for Employment Programme (ISTEP), is funded by Global Affairs Canada. Binrbaum was speaking during a three-day workshop of ISTEP focusing on Career Development Gender Equality held in the city.
The pogramme will see 1,200 Tanzanian youth with the right skills set to find employment in the extractives and tourism sectors, including creating their own employment.
“ISTEP intended to bring together two of our main priority sector. For our international development assistance we focused on three main sectors, education, health and sustainable economic growth,” she said. ISTEP is a bridge to the main two sectors of education and health to contribute in economic development of Tanzania.
Carrier Council services are almost in all schools in Canada to help coach people to decide and make right decision to choose their carrier path.
CICan intended to bring now the service in Tanzania to help the country have better system of coaching people and train them depending on their strength and weaknesses and to know need of the market to Tanzania youth,” she noted.
The Principal Officer in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Education, Gerald Misana, said the programme has come at the right time as it would help the majority of youth come up with better careers for personal and national development.
“The majority of youth have been failing due to poor selection of career, a move that has made them fail to prosper in their trainings…the programme on career will now provide a better guidance when selecting their education careers,” he said.
The undertaking of the programme will see three planned intermediate outcomes that include improved coordination and promotion of relevant gender and environmentally sensitive skills for employment programmes in Tanzania.
