US President-elect Donald Trump has tweeted messages rebutting China's claims to the South China Sea and accusing the country of keeping its currency artificially low.

Trump said on Twitter on Sunday, "Did China ask us if it was OK to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don't think so!"

This is Trump's first reference to the disputed South China Sea since he won the Electoral College in November.

The United States and some Southeast Asian countries have expressed concern over China's militarization of disputed reefs in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. China has reclaimed 7 shoals that are under its effective control, building air fields and other facilities.

In another tweet, Trump questioned whether China had asked if it was OK to devalue their currency, making it hard for US companies to compete, and to heavily tax US products going into their country.

During the election campaign, Trump accused China of manipulating its currency and pledged to impose higher tariffs on Chinese goods.
