A compulsive spender repeatedly gives in to the impulse to
buy much more than he/she needs or can afford. For the compulsive shopper,
spending may serve to relieve painful feelings like depression or anxiety, or
it may produce positive emotions like excitement or happiness
Compulsive shoppers usually buy luxurious items rather than
daily necessities. Men tend to buy cars, exercise equipment etc, women are more
likely to buy clothes, jewelry, and perfume. Some experts link compulsive shopping
with neglect or abuse during childhood; it also seem to be associated with
eating disorder, depression etc.
Compulsive shoppers are usually significantly distressed by
their behavior and its social, personal, and financial consequences.
Characteristics of out-of-control spending include shopping in order to feel
good, using money that had been set aside for other purpose, hiding spending
from others, and spending so much that one goes into debt or engages in illegal
activities.
